Overview

October is one of the most magical times to visit Yellowstone National Park, offering a unique blend of fall foliage, wildlife activity, and fewer crowds than the peak summer season. As the season transitions into winter, early snowfall dusts the landscape, creating a breathtaking contrast between golden aspen groves and the park's iconic steaming geothermal features.

Visitors can choose from a variety of guided tours designed to make the most of the autumn season. Wildlife watching excursions are particularly popular, as October brings the dramatic elk rut and active bison migrations through scenic valleys like Lamar and Hayden. Photography is popular this time of year, capturing the stunning interplay of fall colors, fresh snow, and bubbling hot springs that make Yellowstone unlike anywhere else on earth.

Open-ended day tours are offered in October as the weather changes and areas of the park become hazardous to enter. The itinerary for these tours is based on customer interests and weather conditions/road availability, as sections of roads may close and reopen (weather-dependent) this time of year. Our guides have experience knowing how and where the road conditions can change. We value the safety of our customers and guides and work to avoid dangerous road conditions.

Pick-up time is between 7:30 and 8:00, and is also weather and road-condition-dependent.Pick up in Gardiner – Drop off in Gardiner The main features of these tours depend on customer interest and can be determined close to or at the time of the tour. Many park features and wildlife viewing (animals are typically out and moving around) are available this time of year, but road closures and weather change daily, so some features that are available on one day may not be available the next. But, regardless of the location and day, we always see some great stuff! Please call or text 517-672-2985 if interested in an open-ended day tour.
